Shredded Paper Animal Bedding Gains Popularity
Newspaper has long been a bedding material for animals.
From the lining of gerbil and bird cages, to the flooring of
dog kennels, newsprint is a cheap and effective way to
absorb and catch pet waste. More recently though,
paper shredder have been utilized for a bed liner.
Shredded paper has become a unique alternative to straw
bedding for small animals such as poultry, as well as large
farm animals such as sheep, pigs, horses and cows.
One of the most touted advantages of shredded paper, is
that it utilizes newspaper, which is made up of 100%
recycled paper. Thus the use of paper shredder
remnants promotes recycling, and provides an outlet for
newsprint in rural areas. Additionally, after use, the
used shredded paper can be combined with water acting as a
fertilizer, similar to the way a hydro-seeder operates.
The shredded remnants are available through companies that
contract out this service, or by the purchase and
utilization of a paper shredder with a baler attachment.
The shredded paper is also beneficial to the animal, as
it is cleaner than straw, saw dust or wood shavings, and
possesses none of the allergens or dust associated with
straw. This is especially beneficial to horses, as it
can help protect the horses coats. Research is
being done on the effects of ingestion of the paper by
animals, and the effects on their digestive system and long
term health, but the indication point to the use of paper
shredder shreds as a create alternative to standard animal
bedding material.
