Personnel departments handle private consumer information on a routine basis, which opens them up to potential legal action if they do not handle the information properly.  The FTC has established a Disposal Rule that requires anyone that handles private information from consumers to destroy it before discarding it.  For most businesses and individuals, this means that crosscut paper shredders or a shredding service should be used on consumer data before it is thrown away.  This is of vital importance to all personnel departments because of all the confidential paperwork that passes through their departments.
